Willow Street Steam Generation Plant, 9th and Willow Street, Callowhill/Eraserhood, North Philly.

This is one of those hulking ruins you see from 676 all the time, but never actually drive by the place itself. This huge building is tucked away by parking lots, food processing plants and a Union Hall on the edge of Callowhill and Chinatown.

According to the fabulous Workshop of the World Site, it was “built in 1927 by the Philadelphia Electric Company as part of Center City Philadelphia’s elaborate steam delivery system.”

Now it seems like the need for a giant asbestos cleanup is preventing a rush to use it for anything else.

The building, which shuttered in the late 1990s, had become a squatters haven, a popular space for junkies and graffiti writers. Theresa Stigale took a tour of the building in 2003—and her photos show it. (In the best possible way.) Her photos have a certain pixel-patina, with post-processing she describes as “Instagram before Instagram.” This is her gallery.

The match-up, sponsored by Old Forester and Woodford Reserve, shakes up brown-liquor cocktails from Scott Coudriet of Lloyd, Tim Heuisler of Time Restaurant, The Industry’s Jonny Sherlock and The Trestle’s own Jake Goldberg.

A $20 ticket ($25 at the door) provides a tasting of the competitors’ labors and the opportunity to vote for your preferred concoction.

Proceeds from the event will benefit PAWS the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society.

Shigoku oysters in! They are from Taylor Bay shellfish company based in the Puget Sound in Washington. Full description below:

Crassostrea gigas: Meaning ultimate in Japanese. “A small, dense, cornucopia of an oyster (with) a light, clean taste of cucumber and salt, (and) a finish of water chestnut and Jerusalem artichoke. They grow in floating bags, but are attached to stationary lines and floats that rise and fall with the tides, the result being that the oysters get tumbled twice a day, which continuously chips off the oysters’ growing edge and forces them to ‘cup up,’ getting scoop-shaped and pushing against the limits of their shell as they grow
