“It all started for me in Philadelphia because it’s old enough, and it’s got enough things in the air to really work on itself. It’s decaying but it’s fantastically beautiful, filled with violence, hate and filth.”

Where the hope of the Reading Viaduct is, like New York’s High Line, spurred economic development, Goldtex may well serve as its harbinger. An as yet undetermined restaurant in the Osteria-Alla Spina-Route 6 vein of neighboring North Broad Street will occupy the ground floor. Design wise, the building’s transformation intentionally shirks its industrial past for a more contemporary layout. The 10′ tall glass panels, of multiple colors and multiple materials, are meant to mask the vertical columns typical of other loft conversions in the neighborhood.

The draft comprehensive plan for Philadelphia’s Central District calls for revitalizing civic spaces in Center City, encouraging more development along Ridge Avenue and North Broad Street in West Callowhill, and making more of a neighborhood around Franklin Square.

[…]

With the recent opening of the Barnes Museum and development of the Granary building, development is picking up in West Callowhill, Spina said, but there is still room for more – particularly more commercial space. The area could support about 1.6 million square feet of new construction, even if that construction is kept to low- and mid-rise buildings.

Callowhill/Chinatown North recently got a plan of its own that is incorporated into this draft comprehensive plan. Recommendations taken from it include adding new parks and green space and transforming the Reading Viaduct into an elevated park.

The Philadelphia City Planning Commission will gather public comment on the six proposals for Philadelphia’s second casino license during three open-house sessions next week.

These first city listening meetings will likely not be the last ones, Greenberger said. “I think there will be more as these (casino proposals) evolve and are modified.”

The three sessions:

Tuesday, March 26,  from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lincoln Financial Field, 1020 Pattison Avenue. Use the 11th Street entrance.

Wednesday, March 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Center for Architecture, 1218 Arch Street.

Thursday, March 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Painted Bride Art Center, 230 Vine Street.

In addition to these in-person sections, which Greenberger will open with remarks on the casino licensing process, the PCPC will also conduct an online survey from March 25 through April 5. For more information, visit www.phila.gov/cityplanning.

The gaming control board is also soon holding casino hearings. These will be held in Room 114 of the Pennsylvania Convention Center from 9 am to 9 p.m. On April 11 and from 9 am to 3 p.m. On April 12; and on May 8 at Lincoln Financial Field in the West Club Level from 9 am to 5 p.m. To register to comment: http://gamingcontrolboard.pa.gov/?p=225

Parquet Courts

Scott & Charlene’s Wedding, Household, Amanda X

Sat, May 4, 2013

Doors: 7:30 pm / Show: 8:00 pm

$10.00

Little was said about Parquet Courts’ debut effort, American Specialties. Released exclusively on cassette tape, the quasi-album was an odd collection of 4 track recordings that left those who were paying attention wanting more. A year of woodshedding live sets passed before the Courts committed another song to tape. The band’s first proper LP, Light Up Gold, is a dynamic and diverse foray into the back alleys of the American DIY underground. Bright guitars swirl serpentine over looping, groovy post-punk bass lines and drums that border on robotic precision. While the initial rawness of the band’s early output remains, the songwriting has gracefully evolved. Primary wordsmiths A. Savage and Austin Brown combine for a dynamic lyrical experience, one part an erudite overflow of ideas, the other an exercise in laid-back observation. Lyrically dense, the poetry is in how it flows along with the melody, often times as locked-in as the rhythm section.

Lucero is an alt-country/punk rock band from Memphis, TN. Formed in 1998, the six-piece has built its reputation on writing sing-along songs about small town life and love, putting a modern edge on classic Americana subjects. The members may look like tattooed tough guys, but they write resonant songs that tug the heartstrings of even the most hardened rock fan.
