Brooklyn/Amarcord “Ama” Philly Launch with Andrea Pianini

Public · By Alla Spina Philly

Tuesday, April 2, 2013

Garrett Oliver is well-known as a scholar of all things beer-related, and also as an avid traveler. His sojourns to Italy over the years helped him develop a rapport with one of Italy’s most exciting brewpubs, Amarcord. They decided to make a few beers together, and luckily for us they’re debuting them to the Philly market in the spring!

Two beers will hit Philly by way of Alla Spina on April 2nd: Bionda and Bruna. We’ll be offering discounted bottles all night and each one will come with a complimentary food pairing.

Andrea Pianini from the brewery will be with us from 6pm – 9pm, specials run all night!

Panel Discussion on Art Collecting

Public · By Vox Populi

Sunday, March 31, 2013

1:00pm

As Vox Populi’s exhibit, Collection, comes to close on Sunday we will end on an insightful look into the world of collecting within the Philadelphia art community. We have invited Anne Schaefer, Debra Ward, Jacque Liu, John Ollman and Libby Rosof as guests speakers to take part in a discussion. They each have a unique role as an art collector and some have more than one from this list; artist, art critic, philanthropist and gallery director.

Read more about our guest speakers below. Please come & join the conversation! We will have coffee and donuts to bid farewell to Smarch.

Anne Shaefer is an artist who lives and works in Philadelphia. She is director of local gallery Tiger Strikes Asteroid and involved with an art collecting program entitled, Community Supported Art, in other letters, CSA. CSA is a joint endeavor between two art spaces Tiger Strikes Asteroid and GrizzlyGrizzly.

Jacque Liu is a Philadelphia based artist and member of the artist collective, Grizzly Grizzly. He earned his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. His is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Berlin, Germany, where he co-founded the artist space and residency, Takt Kunstprojektraum.

Debra (Deb) Ward has lived in Philadelphia since 2000 and although she never formally studied art, she was fortunate enough to meet a few artists when first moving to the city that inspired her to start collecting art. She joined the Board of Vox Populi in 2005 and has served as Board President since 2009. She and her partner Craig have acquired over 50 pieces in the last several years and they enjoy hosting parties and events at their home in Fairmount to share the work with friends, neighbors, and the artists themselves.

John Ollman lives in Philadelphia, collects art and is the owner of Fleisher/Ollman gallery. Under John Ollman’s early direction, Fleisher/Ollman was among the first galleries to feature work by self taught artists including Henry Darger, Sister Gertrude Morgan, Bill Traylor, and Martin Ramirez. The gallery also features work by local contemporary artists including Anthony Campuzano, Steven and Billy Dufala, Isaac Tin Wei Lin, Jennifer Levonian, Jayson Musson, Paul Swenbeck and Tristin Lowe.

Libby Rosof, with fellow writer and artist Roberta Fallon, created the publication now known as theartblog.org, because their giant sculptures of concrete and their small hand-held objects that they gave out on the street didn’t get reviewed on the front page of the city’s papers.

The problem was bigger than both of them. Philadelphia print media coverage was contracting and the art scene was growing. In the 10 years since theartblog began, Philadelphia’s alternative gallery scene has developed a national and even an international reputation. So has theartblog, which now has a real-world presence, giving tours; teaching and mentoring art students and writers; and giving talks about contemporary art.

Libby is married to the author Murray Dubin. They commute to San Francisco on a regular basis to visit their grandson, Baby Oscar.

THE CINEDELPHIA FILM FESTIVAL presents

Sunday, April 14 2013, 9:30 PM
VIVISECTIONS: International Short Horror Films Program

Local filmmaker Matt Garrett presents the Philadelphia premieres of 9 horrific shorts from the US, Canada, Australia and the UK.

Select filmmakers will be in attendance for a Q&A following the screening.

Voyeurism, snuff, cinema and sex collide in RED, a provocative slow-burn shocker from Montreal horror maven, Maude Michaud (Hollywood Skin). In Rafael De Leon Jr’s BIRTHDAY BOYS, teenager Riley turns to dark forces in order to bring back her lost love. Cinematic madman Sam Walker (Tea Break) presents his short film/music video hybrid BITE HORSE, the first chapter of a multi-media collaboration with the Southern Gothic band Mississippi Witch. Next is Doll Parts and Stained director Karen Lam’s THE STOLEN, a dark fairy tale about a young girl with a big heart who is forced to strike a bargain with beings from another world. The more serious portion of our program concludes with the stop-motion animated nightmare, CREPUSCULE, from visionary director Éric Falardeau (Thanatomorphose). A young woman, bound at the wrists, attempts to escape her demented redneck captors in screenwriter Josh MacDonald’s (The Corridor) beautifully photographed and wickedly funny directorial debut, GAME. Aussie director Dave Wade’s slick, sick and hilariously crude A TALE OF OBSESSION follows an overweight teen goth as she attempts to curb her hunger to win the heart (and body) of the perpetually shirtless school hunk. Matt O’Mahoney, director of the Fantastic Fest award-winning Electric Fence, returns with ADJUST TRACKING, a lovingly meaty homage to the Golden Age of VHS Horror. And finally, from the delightfully twisted minds of Greg Hanson & Casey Regan (Thy Kill Be Done) comes the definitive argument against USDA-approved cannibalism, MEAT ME IN PLAINVILLE. Think Soylent Green meets I Drink Your Blood with a healthy dose of Father Knows Best thrown in for good measure. Human Meat Is Murder!

Every film in this program is a Philadelphia Premiere, having previously played such festivals as Cannes, Fantasia, PiFan, Sydney Underground, and Fantastic Fest.

Total Running Time: 109 minutes

Advance tix are $10, no refunds or exchanges.

The Cinedelphia Film Festival is a Philly-centric celebration of Philly film running from April 4-27, 2013.
