Neighborhood News

Dear Members, Neighbors and Friends !
Please join the community in the opening of Site/Sound: Revealing the Rail Park.

The Friends of the Rail Park in collaboration with Mural Arts Philadelphia https://www.muralarts.org
and

American Composers Forum https://composersforum.org is excited to invite you to the opening of Site/Sound: Revealing the Rail Park on October 5, 2019 at 6 pm.

Site/Sound: Revealing the Rail Park is a unique new festival that combines audio-visual art installations and diverse music performances, all shaped by their surroundings. Above and below the city streets, the installations celebrate and imagine the past, present, and future of Philadelphia’s Rail Park. Through community workshops, panels, tours, and performances, we’ll bring to life a new shared urban space rising from the tracks and thoroughfares that were once the terminus of the mighty Reading Railroad.

Saturday, Oct. 5, through Saturday, Oct. 19, the festival will feature three large-scale art installations (2 in Callowhill, 1 in Logan Square) using sound and light, as well as additional free community programming, like a taiko drumming performance, poetry reading, mural tour and discussion on public art and public spaces.

The kick-off celebration of the festival will occur on October 5, 2019 at 6pm at Baldwin Park, located at 429 N. 19th Street, from 6-8pm.  Please join the community for a fun evening with activities for the whole family as we count down to the first live musical performance in conjunction with the revealing of the Moon Viewing Platform installation along the Rail Park’s Cut (between 17th and 18th Streets).

A Spooky Speakeasy–Themed Bar Is Popping Up in Philly for Halloween – Eater Philly

Dark Passage, complete with a bar called the Strange Spirits Lounge, opens in Philadelphia October 4
Shutterstock

The first stop at Dark Passage, opening October 4 at 1004 Buttonwood Drive in Callowhill, is the Strange Spirits Lounge, which creator Pseudonym Productions is describing as a speakeasy-themed bar. The company worked with Carey to put this piece of the attraction together, and the key here is you can get a cocktail (Halloween-themed, of course) and take it with you as tour the rest of the rooms (and, presumably, try not to jump in fright and spill it. Maybe safer to just drink the whole thing first). The setup is fairly loose, meaning once you leave the bar you can circle back to it whenever you want.

Pennsylvania Ballet Planning New Building on North Broad – OCF Realty

Panorama 1905_blended_fused small

Per the architects, this new building will include dance studios, including a space that will also function as a performance space, complete with retractable seating. The building will also house changing rooms, a dancer’s lounge, a cafe, and the aforementioned administrative offices. While it’s unfortunate that the old terracotta building couldn’t be integrated into the new structure, we’re at least cheered that the new project will bring a contemporary flair to North Broad Street, and better street presence than the current setup.

Bees, Beer, Rail Park Star Party, BalletX and a Neighborhood Clean Up !

This week in Callowhill !

Thursday Sept 19-
Roy-Pitz Barrel House
990 Spring Garden St.
September 19,19 – 5 to 7pm

Sting Arts launch celebrating Bees + Beer !
The rooftops of 990 Spring Garden and 448 N 10th Street are now home to rooftop bee hives. Each building has three hives with 50,000 bees producing honey. By mid-September, the Sting Arts bees are expected to produce 200 pounds of honey.
What’s all the BUZZ about? What’s all the buzz about?  Local bees from the rail park have been hard at work to produce a delicious floral honey that goes perfect in a Philadelphia brewed IPA. The honey is fermented warm to dry out this ale while at the same time leaving a sweet honey perception and aroma. Light and delicate this honey forward ale is a perfect template for west coast hops to express their intense tropical fruit and dank resins. Working in collaboration with Tools for Schools, 50% of all proceeds will be donated to this charity.

Then head over to the Rail Park-
