Ben Volta is an artist working with the Asian Arts Initiative on an exiting project called the Social Practice Lab. His project will circle around ideas of ENERGY in order to create drawings based on technical imagery and personal and poetic interpretations. The drawings will be made by teens and by neighbors of all ages in the Callowhill and Chinatown communities. Weekly workshops beginning in April will result in a public art installation on the fence or in proximity to the PECO substation. The location and material for this installation is still TBD, but he is looking into temperature sensitive paint and large format screen printing. Ben met with PECO in December and they have agreed to review materials and seriously consider the project. PECO has also committed to lending one of their engineers/professors to meet with the community and teach us some of the science behind the substation.

New York Times food writer Mark Bittman is coming to Congregation Rodeph Shalom on March 13 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the What Is Your Food Worth? series, a conversation about food, ethics, sustainability and eating Jewish. Bittman will be on hand to talk about “The Future of Food” and how eating a healthier and more socially conscious diet is better for the planet, your body, animal welfare and more.

Michael and Jeniphur Pasquarello have developed a mini-empire in the Loft District near Broad and Callowhill Streets. They are approaching the 10th anniversary of the industrial-chic Cafe Lift, in a former police-hat manufacturing plant at 428 N. 13th St., and the fifth anniversary of Prohibition Taproom, a bar in a former shot-and-a-beer a half-block north at 13th and Buttonwood. New this week is Bufad, a wood-fired BYOB pizzeria at 13th and Spring Garden Streets (215-238-9311), on the former site of Yum Yum restaurant.
