In light of George Baselitz recent remarks about “women painters” in GalleristNY and the unyielding response to New York Times critic Ken Johnson’s preview of the exhibition The Female Gaze: Women Artists Making Their World and Now Dig This!: Art and Black Los Angeles 1960-1980 it’s clear that prejudice is still alive and kicking. So on Sunday, February 10, 4-6 p.m the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts will host a free Public Forum on Gender and Race in Contemporary Art. PAFA’s forum brings together members of the art community and the public for a lively debate around the following questions: What role does identity politics play in the contemporary art world? How do gender and race play into the art we make, the art we collect and exhibit, and the way we talk about the merits of a work of art?

Admittedly, its location wasn’t exactly a secret — Technically Philly recently switched over to Callowhill-based data center Razor Servers – but we did venture through rows and rows of blinking servers to find ours.

Sebastian & Storey, a pair of 20-something year old Philadelphia artists, have teamed up to present Plugged Inn: An Electric Cabaret. Hosted by local actor and personality Michael Fisher, Plugged Inn takes a traditional cabaret and electrifies it. Sebastian & Storey (and special guest artists) mix electronic music, theatre, and dance, adding their individual points of view to create something a tad… different. Plugged Inn combines the energy of a concert, the intrigue of dance theatre, & the atmosphere of a house party, and will leave you wondering, “Where they do that at?”
Sebastian serves up high-energy electronic music, intense choreography and a bit of sexuality. His plot-driven song and dance numbers excite and tantalize.
Ben Storey is one half of the lo-fi electropop duo Mixed Signals, along with Anne Marie Drolet. The band formed in Greensboro, North Carolina in 2009. After a year and a half of shows, an East Coast tour, and one long hiatus, they are back to blow up the Philly music scene. Their video game-inspired beats and lyrics about kittens, bike rides and whiskey will make you dance and giggle at the same time. Mario Party!
