The Rail Park is growing!

Happy Women’s History month Friends of the Rail Park is a women-led organization. Our small-but-mighty team is spearheaded by Rebecca Cordes Chan, Executive Director, and Ava Schwemler, Strategic Communications Manager. And 8 of our 11 Board Members are women, too! Are you passionate about green space, community, arts, and culture? The Rail Park team is growing! We’re hiring a Public Programs Manager (contract position), so help us spread the word to anyone who might be interested. APPLY NOW Deadline to apply is March 12, 2021 Tire Swing Update As one of our Tire Swing microgrant recipients, artist and cultural worker Ali Ruffner created Voices of the Neighborhood: Mapping Messages and Memory, a follow-up to their installation at the Rail Park’s Site + Sound in 2019.
“I feel like connection and community are aspects of survival right now. Parks are a space where neighbors can meet, talk, kickback, explore, share, and love. I moved this project into the virtual realm in an effort to keep neighbors connected in a safe way across the Rail Park Space”   — Ali Ruffner
This North Philadelphia community-generated story sharing platform hopes to connect neighbors across social distancing guidelines, ages, languages, and temporality, building a map that allows people to experience stories, browse oral histories, and share their own messages and memories. What’s new at the park

THE RAIL PARK Open Every Day 7am to 10pm
Thank you to our incredible community for contributing to the Rail Park on #GivingTuesday. If you donated to the campaign between December 1 and December 6, your donation was DOUBLED by our Board! In total, we raised $5,200 from our campaign, which will go towards funding new plant life on the park, and toward our efforts to obtain a feasibility study for the full three mile vision.  A feasibility study will help us better understand what is possible for the future of the Rail Park, how much it will cost, and what our next steps should be! In the meantime, the addition of more plant life at the park will enhance the park’s beauty and biodiversity in the upcoming new year.

It is because of supporters like you that the Rail Park continues to thrive, and our planning process for the full three miles is in motion. Thank you!    Sincerely,
Rebecca & Ava

If you’re interested in applying for the Steering Committee, you can apply online until December 15.

Accepted participants will receive a small stipend for their time and be expected to participate in 12 of 15 meetings (2 hours each) to be held between December 2020 and Spring 2022 (virtually for the foreseeable future). APPLY FREE Virtual Art Class & Supplies

To register, email [email protected], or text Teisha at (215) 948-9417.  One Percent for Art – Call for Artists Submissions due January 4 The City of Philadelphia’s One Percent for Art Program and Delaware River Waterfront Corporation seek to commission a high quality, original, and site specific sculptural public artwork that is integrated with the site’s design. The artwork has the opportunity to be integral to the design of the park’s features such as walks, low walls, shade structures at the garden or stage, or seating terraces and elements. This integration could help tell the many stories – historic, present and future – that make up the site’s past and the park’s potential to speak to all Philadelphians and visitors, with meaning, inclusivity and thoughtfulness. The artwork could also be a singular grand sculptural element.  Response Deadline: January 4, 2021. Support PhilaMOCA’s Eventual Resurrection

What a long 14 months!

For those not in the know, PhilaMOCA was shut down by the city back in September 2019 with a change in zoning required to reopen.  In January of this year we were granted the special exception for the new zoning and last month we cleared all of the code issues that accompanied the change.  Throughout that long process we invested tens of thousands of dollars upgrading the room, mainly related to fire and safety matters, including fireproof curtains, fire-rated doors, additional egress signs and smoke detectors, and shunt trip safety switches (shuts off the PA and amps when the fire alarm goes off).  We also soundproofed the entryway and 12th Street wall for the benefit of our neighbors.

All of these upgrades wouldn’t have been possible without the financial support of the public who have generously donated to our GoFundMe for the past year.  We’ve been able to survive the pandemic with no income thanks to an EIDL loan, proceeds from Vans’ Foot the Bill program, and merchandise sales including t-shirts and posters.  We’re almost ready for our final CO inspection, but have been waiting over a month now for the final piece of paperwork from the city.  There’s no time estimate on when that will arrive, and due to pandemic restrictions we wouldn’t be able to reopen this year anyway, which is why we’re now turning back to the public to raise funds to cover rent and utilities while we wait things out.

Donations can be made to our GoFundMe page here:
http://www.gofundme.com/resurrect-philamoca
Our Venmo account is also active: @PhilaMOCA

Your help is greatly appreciated!  We plan on returning to a full time schedule with limited capacity once the city allows.  Resurrection is nigh!
