Paul VanMeter embraces the Viaduct as a vestige of Philly’s past and an emblem of its future possibilities. A landscape artist with a love of sustainable and spontaneous agriculture, Paul launched a mission to repurpose the remarkable greenway as a public park—a project known as ViaductGreene.

[After studying the history of this rail-bed ourselves for years, we still learned new things on the tour with VanMeter.]

URBAN LANDSCAPES FROM PHILADELPHIA’S INDUSTRIAL LEGACY

TUESDAY, JULY 2, 2013 TO TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 2, 2013
CAFE 12, 212 S 12TH ST, PHILADELPHIA, PA

Opening presentation 6 p.m., July 2 at Cafe 12

Once again, eraserhood.com documentary photographer Bob Bruhin celebrates the Philadelphia neighborhood that inspired such diverse artists as David Lynch, David Goodis, and Sarah McEneaney. Bruhin’s “twisted views of a demented square mile” lovingly explore the rugged, gritty beauty of the classic industrial Callowhill neighborhood through the transcendent vision of a magical realist.

Bruhin has been working in and documenting the Callowhill neighborhood since 2007. He has exhibited in such diverse venues as West Philadelphia’s Seeds Gallery, Mt. Airy’s Highpoint Cafe, and PhilaMOCA’s 2012 Eraserhood Forever event.

This exhibition is sponsored by the Photographic Society of Philadelphia, in conjunction with Cafe 12.

Alla Prima Figure with David Shevlino

Monday, June 24, 2013, 9:00 AM to Friday, June 28, 2013, 4:00 PM
Studio Incamminati, School for Contemporary Realist Art, 340 North 12th St. Suite 500, Philadelphia, PA 19017

Focusing on painting the figure alla prima (wet into wet), the workshop explores techniques used to create a looser, spontaneous response to our subjects and take advantage of a slow-drying medium to keep the paint fresh and workable. An initial demonstration is followed by students working on their own and learning to interpret and simplify their subject by focusing on basic shapes and forms as described by masses of color/ light and shadow. Learning to simplify what we see allows us to paint our subjects with greater clarity and to use our brushwork with greater economy.

Guest Instructor David Shevlino is a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the University of Pennsylvania. He has had several solo exhibitions ofhis work in NY galleries and in cities throughout the U.S. His work has been featured in American Artist Magazine, American Art Collector, The New Yorker, New American Paintings and The Artists’ Magazine.

Tomahawk is back!
Where were they? What were they doing? Is this a reunion? Who are they now? What’s next?

So many questions. Here are those answers and more!

Tomahawk took a break to discover the many truths of the universe. They also uncovered several non truths. They were primarily holed up in a special place similar to the many caves in the mountains of Appalachia. They found time to create the new tunes that make up their new record “Oddfellows” that will be released worldwide in January 2013 on Ipecac Recordings.
