Attention, Artists: Be a Part of the RailPark’s Revitalization – Fun With Urban Planning – Curbed Philly

The Viaduct RailPark is coming soon, which will transform sections of the long-abandoned stretch of rail line that runs through the Chinatown and Callowhill neighborhoods into a “grittier take on NYC’s High Line.” Construction is still slated to begin later this year, but starting right now, you and yours can get involved in the Viaduct’s metamorphosis, through a call for submissions for art installations that will adorn several locations of the public space.

Eraserhood? Callowhill? How the neighborhood David Lynch made famous is changing, and showing its roots

One of the most telling views of the Callowhill neighborhood looks south on 12th Street near Spring Garden. A hip clothing store to the left, Chinese food joint to the right, and in the distance both a smoke stack and a rehabbed factory that was turned into luxury loft apartments.

Update: Many New Buildings at 11th & Wood | Naked Philly

The northeast corner of 11th & Wood has been vacant for decades. And this makes sense to some extent. For many years, trains ran on the elevated viaduct immediately to the west, a now-abandoned stretch which will soon become the Rail Park. And half a block to the south, the Vine Street Expressway has been moving cars from here to there for the last twenty-five plus years and let’s just say that developers haven’t been falling over each other to build next to the highway. But something is changing in this area. Maybe it’s because developers are looking at any and all possibilities near Center City. Maybe it’s because there’s finally optimism that the Rail Park is going to happen soon, which will make the neighborhoods near the viaduct far more attractive. We’d say this is certainly the case in the West Poplar neighborhood, so why not the northern part of Chinatown too? Remember, the Goldtex building, a warehouse turned apartment building, is just a block away from here, just on the other side of the viaduct.Last fall, we told you about some new foundations at 11th & Wood. Checking in here now, you can see a corner that’s being totally built up.

The Eraserhood Might Not Be a Thing, But the Rail Park Is – Cool Map Thing – Curbed Philly

A short while ago, the City Planning Commission passed a bill authorizing the City to acquire an portion of the elevated rail line known as the “Viaduct,” and to lease a portion of the property to SEPTA. Those following the development of ‘Philadelphia’s High Line’ know that this means Phase I of The Rail Park is officially underway, with plans still to break ground later in 2015. To all of you, this means that one of the hottest public spaces in Philadelphia is coming soon to the Eraserhood. Or Callowhill. Whatever. You’re gonna want to be here when it does.
