A MORE PERFECT UNION: CELEBRATING THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF LOVING V. VIRGINIA
A juried exhibition at Asian Arts Initiative
Curated by Dave Kyu
Exhibition: June 2 – August 25, 2017
Submission Deadline: Monday, April 24, 2017, 11:59PMCURATORIAL STATEMENT
The election of Barack Obama was seen as a turning point of a society that had become “post-race,” or in other words, a society free from racial preference, discrimination, and prejudice. But this is not the world we live in. We live instead in a world that has leaned into race; into a political climate where understanding the intersectionality of race, gender, and identity are more important than ever.We take this moment to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Loving v. Virginia case, and the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision to invalidate laws prohibiting interracial marriage. This decision affirms that our fundamental civil rights cannot be denied based on the classifications of race. This decision is a celebration of an American system, that although often flawed, is capable of correcting injustice, in the pursuit of a more perfect Union.
A More Perfect Union invited artists of all disciplines to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Loving v. Virginia, to explore the themes of interracial marriage and relationships, but also the various aspects of interracial identity; an identity made possible in large part by this Supreme Court decision.
Said Mildred Loving, “That’s what Loving, and loving, are all about.”
ELIGIBILITY
We invite professional and emerging artists (including recent graduates of matriculated programs) working in any medium (visual artists, writers & poets, musicians, performers) to submit one (1) to three (3) original artworks that explore the themes of interracial marriage and relationships, and also the various aspects of interracial identity. Works will be selected by the curator for this juried exhibition that celebrates the 50th anniversary of the “Loving v. Virginia” Supreme Court decision.ENTRIES

“What makes Eraserhead great—and still, perhaps the best of all Lynch’s films? Intensity. Nightmare clarity. And perhaps also it’s the single-mindedness of its vision.” –Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune
David Lynch’s surreal and seminal feature-length film debut portrays Philadelphia as a desolate black-and-white industrial landscape, devoid of warmth. The film is at once a beautiful look into the mind of protagonist Harry (Jack Nance), a lost dreamer, and a haunting portrayal of marriage and responsibility.
$20 / includes film and light meal (stay tuned for menu details)

Exploring David Lynch’s “Eraserhood” | Hidden City Philadelphia
April 16 @ 11:00 am – 12:30 pm
“Philadelphia, more than any filmmaker, influenced me. It’s the sickest, most corrupt, decaying, fear-ridden city imaginable.” — David Lynch
When David Lynch moved to Philadelphia in the late 1960s to attend PAFA, he discovered a city that was both terrifying and inspiring. Explore the neighborhood that so electrified Lynch’s imagination in the company of two tour guides: Hidden City’s Peter Woodall and Lynch aficionado Bob Bruhin. During this one-and-a-half hour walking tour, we’ll delve into the neighborhood’s pre- and post-Lynch history, as well as the sights and sounds that inspired Lynch’s movies, particularly Eraserhead.
