CURATORIAL STATEMENT
The election of Barack Obama was seen as a turning point of a society that had become “post-race,” or in other words, a society free from racial preference, discrimination, and prejudice. But this is not the world we live in. We live instead in a world that has leaned into race; into a political climate where understanding the intersectionality of race, gender, and identity are more important than ever.

We take this moment to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Loving v. Virginia case, and the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision to invalidate laws prohibiting interracial marriage. This decision affirms that our fundamental civil rights cannot be denied based on the classifications of race. This decision is a celebration of an American system, that although often flawed, is capable of correcting injustice, in the pursuit of a more perfect Union.

A More Perfect Union invited artists of all disciplines to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Loving v. Virginia, to explore the themes of interracial marriage and relationships, but also the various aspects of interracial identity; an identity made possible in large part by this Supreme Court decision.

Said Mildred Loving, “That’s what Loving, and loving, are all about.”

ELIGIBILITY
We invite professional and emerging artists (including recent graduates of matriculated programs) working in any medium (visual artists, writers & poets, musicians, performers) to submit one (1) to three (3) original artworks that explore the themes of interracial marriage and relationships, and also the various aspects of interracial identity. Works will be selected by the curator for this juried exhibition that celebrates the 50th anniversary of the “Loving v. Virginia” Supreme Court decision.

ENTRIES
Entry forms must be complete and submitted online only. There is no entry fee.

All submissions must be received by Monday, April 24 at 11:59pm EST.

SUBMISSIONS
– Support material can include images of your artwork, Microsoft Word files, and/or a list of links to video/audio files.
– Images must be saved as JPG files at 72dpi and must be no larger than 2000 pixels in any direction.
– Each file name should correspond with the entry form. For example, Mildred Loving’s image should be titled “LovingM1 Untitled.” You may include up to 3 additional details of each work.
– Video and Audio files should not exceed 3 minutes (excerpts will be accepted) and should be uploaded to YouTube, Vimeo, or Soundcloud.

When David Lynch moved to Philadelphia in the late 1960s to attend PAFA, he discovered a city that was both terrifying and inspiring. Explore the neighborhood that so electrified Lynch’s imagination in the company of two tour guides: Hidden City’s Peter Woodall and Lynch aficionado Bob Bruhin. During this one-and-a-half hour walking tour, we’ll delve into the neighborhood’s pre- and post-Lynch history, as well as the sights and sounds that inspired Lynch’s movies, particularly Eraserhead.When David Lynch moved to Philadelphia in the late 1960s to attend PAFA, he discovered a city that was both terrifying and inspiring. We will visit locations where change is actively happening in the Callowhill District, and discuss the impact of change, both positive and negative, on the neighborhood as both an historic district, and as a vital, living community.

Oscar Casas, Argentine tango teacher extraordinaire, will return to Philadelphia for several days of workshops, milongas and private lessons Thursday May 4 – Tuesday May 9

We’ll be offering at least 6 workshops plus the opportunity to study privately with this renowned maestro, Get to know him at a Gala Milonga at the Ethical Society scheduled for Friday, May 5. and a special Milonga en Casa Sunday May 7.

Tango is not the figures. Between the figures are musical movements that help maintain the flow of dance.(Inter/Adv)

4:30 – 6 pm Workshop 6: Vals, Consecutive Turns.
Turns on two axes, with followers’ adornments, are important for developing the vals. (Inter/Adv)

6:30 to midnight A Special Milonga en CASA.

Biography
Oscar Casas was born in Parque Patricios, a well-known tango barrio in Buenos Aires. His parents were avid tango dancers and successful milonga organizers. Oscar absorbed the code (codigo) of the milongueros, and when he eventually decided to take up the dance seriously, he already had a background and base that was the envy of many.
Oscar has a distinct style both in his dance and his teaching. He is very milonguero, and is highly respected by the old guard in the milongas of BA. He teaches with energy and humor, emphasizing concepts, specializing in improvisation always interpreting the music and respecting the character of the different orchestras. He is especially interested in the dynamics and cadencia of the dance. Everything he teaches is applicable to crowded milongas.

Vox Populi is accepting submissions for VOX XIII – our thirteenth annual juried exhibition of emerging artists, which will take place from July 7th – July 30th, 2017. This year’s distinguished jurors are Aria Dean and David Hartt.

This opportunity is particularly for emerging artists without commercial representation who push boundaries in terms of form and content, employ alternative methodologies and want to expose their practice to new audiences. Vox Populi is interested in highlighting work in all media that is ambitious, timely and risk-taking.

Applicants may submit up to five works in any media. The deadline for the open call is Sunday, May 7th, 2017. A new discounted submission fee will be extended to any early applications submitted before April 14th. ABOUT OUR JURORS:

Aria Dean

Dean is a Los Angeles-based writer and artist. She currently holds the position of Assistant Curator of Net Art & Digital Culture at Rhizome. Her writing has been featured in Artforum, The New Inquiry, Real Life Magazine, Topical Cream Magazine, and X-TRA Contemporary Art Quarterly. Dean has shown at Arcadia Missa (London), The Knockdown Center (NYC), and Club Pro (Los Angeles). In September, she has a solo exhibition at American Medium (NYC). She also co-directs Los Angeles gallery and project space As It Stands LA. Currently, Dean’s research, writing, and visual work explore the relationship and resonances between blackness, media, and communication and information technologies. She works primarily through text and sculpture to hypothesize an apocalyptic blackness.

David Hartt

Hartt is a Philadelphia-based artist whose work unpacks the social, cultural, and economic complexities of his various subjects. He has extensive experience using video and photography to carry out research related to vernacular cultures, anthropology, and architectural history. David is the recipient of a 2015 Foundation for Contemporary Art Grant, was named a United States Artists Cruz Fellow in 2012, and received a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award in 2011. His work has been exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Carnegie Museum of Art, LA><ART, Or Gallery in Vancouver, the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the National Gallery of Canada. Born in Montreal, he has an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA from the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Ottawa. David currently serves as Assistant Professor of Fine Arts in the School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania.

Submission Guidelines:
Applicants should submit a short statement, resume and up to five work samples (including images, audio files or short texts). Selected artists need to provide installation ready work complete with hardware. Vox Populi will exercise the same care in respect to loans as it does in safekeeping its own property. We urge you to consider the DIY and high traffic nature of Vox Populi’s exhibition and event environment.
