Philadelphia Psychotronic Film Society – April meeting #2

Monday, April 24 at 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM
531 N. 12th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19123

Programmer: Cinedelphia Film Festival

The second of two special April meetings guest programmed by the CFF! Special guests, appropriate for anyone with psychotronic sensibilities.

The above image does not reflect the film that will be screened.

We are the most informal of film clubs, providing free screenings of cult/weirdo/B-movie fare, meeting on the second and final Monday of every month at PhilaMOCA for one full movie and maybe a short or two. Sometimes the film will be a surprise, other times it’ll be announced ahead of time. Everyone who joins up gets a say in future screenings. You become an official member after signing in at three meetings and are rewarded with a cool enamel pin of the PPFS logo. BYOB is encouraged as is the Psychotronic Film Society way.

The Philadelphia Psychotronic Film Society is officially sanctioned by Brian Thomas, Propaganda Minister of the Sinister for Chicago’s Psychotronic Film Society.

WARNING: The content of what we’ve come to know as psychotronic films runs the gamut from talking dogs to violent assaults. There will always be a warning of some sort on all PPFS event pages. Sometimes the programmer will choose to be revealing and detailed about the content of their selection in advance, sometimes it will be a simple warning regarding the possibility of extreme content. In the latter case, it is wisest for those who will possibly be offended by extreme subject matter to err on the side of caution.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Call for Artists – A More Perfect Union: Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Loving v. Virginia — Asian Arts Initiative

A MORE PERFECT UNION: CELEBRATING THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF LOVING V. VIRGINIA
A juried exhibition at Asian Arts Initiative
Curated by Dave Kyu
Exhibition: June 2 – August 25, 2017
Submission Deadline: Monday, April 24, 2017, 11:59PM

CURATORIAL STATEMENT
The election of Barack Obama was seen as a turning point of a society that had become “post-race,” or in other words, a society free from racial preference, discrimination, and prejudice. But this is not the world we live in. We live instead in a world that has leaned into race; into a political climate where understanding the intersectionality of race, gender, and identity are more important than ever.

We take this moment to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Loving v. Virginia case, and the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision to invalidate laws prohibiting interracial marriage. This decision affirms that our fundamental civil rights cannot be denied based on the classifications of race. This decision is a celebration of an American system, that although often flawed, is capable of correcting injustice, in the pursuit of a more perfect Union.

A More Perfect Union invited artists of all disciplines to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Loving v. Virginia, to explore the themes of interracial marriage and relationships, but also the various aspects of interracial identity; an identity made possible in large part by this Supreme Court decision.

Said Mildred Loving, “That’s what Loving, and loving, are all about.”

ELIGIBILITY
We invite professional and emerging artists (including recent graduates of matriculated programs) working in any medium (visual artists, writers & poets, musicians, performers) to submit one (1) to three (3) original artworks that explore the themes of interracial marriage and relationships, and also the various aspects of interracial identity. Works will be selected by the curator for this juried exhibition that celebrates the 50th anniversary of the “Loving v. Virginia” Supreme Court decision.

Entry forms must be complete and submitted online only. There is no entry fee.

All submissions must be received by Monday, April 24 at 11:59pm EST.
