Hidden City Philadelphia – Exploring David Lynch’s “Eraserhood” – September 16, 2018 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM

When David Lynch moved to Philadelphia in the late 1960s to attend PAFA, he discovered a city that was both terrifying and inspiring. Explore the neighborhood just blocks away from PAFA that so electrified Lynch’s imagination with two guides: Hidden City’s Peter Woodall and Lynch–and Eraserhood–aficionado, Bob Bruhin. During this one-and-a-half hour walking tour, we’ll delve into the area’s industrial history, as well as the sights and sounds that inspired Lynch’s movies, particularly Eraserhead.

When: September 16, 2018 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Location: Meet at the southeast corner of 13th and Wood Sts.

Tickets: Hidden City Philadelphia – Exploring David Lynch’s “Eraserhood”

This year’s Eraserhood Forever event will be headlined by @Chrysta_Bell aka Special Agent Tammy Preston! Tix available now!

Chrysta Bell

Dubbed “David Lynch’s muse” (Vanity Fair), Chrysta Bell is currently starring as Special Agent Tammy Preston on Showtime’s TWIN PEAKS opposite David Lynch and Miguel Ferrer. She will be performing tracks from her recently released sophomore album, WE DISSOLVE, along with selections from her David Lynch-written/produced 2011 debut and 2016 EP. This marks Chrysta Bell’s first-ever live performance in Philadelphia.

The evening will also feature Lynch-themed DJ sets from @ThatsOurWaldo (Welcome to Twin Peaks) and will be hosted, as always, by Ben Velvet (local comedian Paul Triggiani). Opening act will be announced in the coming months.

ABOUT:
Chrysta Bell, TWIN PEAKS actress and longtime musical partner of David Lynch, recently released her sophomore album, WE DISSOLVE, via AWAL/Kobalt Music Recordings. Recorded in Bristol, UK, with Mercury Prize-winning producer John Parish (PJ Harvey’s Let England Shake), WE DISSOLVE is a pop record with elements of soul, rock and jazz, and features contributions from guest artists including Adrian Utley (Portishead), keyboardist Geoff Downes (Asia, Yes) and drone metal guitarist Stephen O’Malley of Sunn O))).

David Lynch wrote and produced Chrysta Bell’s 11-song debut, THIS TRAIN (2011), as well as her acclaimed 2016 EP, SOMEWHERE IN THE NOWHERE. Evocative of Lynch’s film and television productions, both retro-tinged releases feature dark and airy musical soundscapes conjuring a dramatic atmosphere that allow Chrysta Bell’s sensual vocals and soulful melodies to take flight. The closing moments of his surreal epic INLAND EMPIRE featured the duo’s song “Polish Poem,” a classically Lynchian ballad.

Chrysta Bell is featured in TWIN PEAKS in the role of FBI Agent Tamara Preston, acting alongside Miguel Ferrer and David Lynch. Twin Peaks premiered on Showtime on May 21 to wide critical acclaim. David Lynch says Chrysta Bell “is not only a killer performer, she also has a great intuitive ability to catch a mood and find a melody that’s really spectacular,” and recalls, “The first time I saw her perform, I thought she was like an alien. The most beautiful alien ever.”

Chrysta Bell’s professional career as musician began after being signed by RCA Victor at the age of 18 as the lead vocalist for the popular Austin-based gypsy swing act 8 ½ Souvenirs. In her four-year tenure with the band, Chrysta Bell delighted audiences on many North American tours and shared the stage with legendary musicians such as Willie Nelson and Brian Setzer.

Once again, eraserhood.com documentary photographer Bob Bruhin celebrates the Philadelphia neighborhood that inspired such diverse artists as David Lynch, David Goodis, and Sarah McEneaney. Bruhin’s “twisted views of a demented square mile” lovingly explore the rugged, gritty beauty of the classic industrial Callowhill neighborhood through the transcendent vision of a magical realist.

Bruhin has been working in and documenting the Callowhill neighborhood since 2007. He has exhibited in such diverse venues as West Philadelphia’s Seeds Gallery, Mt. Airy’s Highpoint Cafe, and PhilaMOCA’s 2012 Eraserhood Forever event.

This exhibition is sponsored by the Photographic Society of Philadelphia, in conjunction with Cafe 12.
