“It all started for me in Philadelphia because it’s old enough, and it’s got enough things in the air to really work on itself. It’s decaying but it’s fantastically beautiful, filled with violence, hate and filth.”
— David Lynch

Images from the Eraserhood (by Bob Bruhin)
That image is the abandoned Willow Street steam generating plant. I used to take to the streets back between 1990 through 2000 and feed and clothe homeless people.
There was a shelter a few blocks away from this building where a couple friends and I would set up tables and serve soup, sandwiches and coffee to the homeless.
There is still a shelter near there, Bethesda Project’s Our Brothers’ Place. I don’t know if this is where you volunteered, but good work is still happening in the shadow of Willow Steam.
Willow Steam is still one of my very favorite places in all of Philadelphia. I’ll be very sad if they ever demolish it.
Thanks, again, for the personal reminiscence!!
