The Architecture of David Lynch – Kindle

Forty years after Lynch left Philadelphia, Callowhill remains an assortment of industrial detritus and railway infrastructure, where isolated homes and abandoned warehouses sit alongside parking lots and auto-repair shops (Plate 8). Cut off from downtown by the Vine Street Expressway, it maintains a feeling of desolation and poverty, though the remnants of glorious Art Deco hotels and factories have led to the area’s inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. The transformation of several of these buildings into upscale apartment blocks has also placed Callowhill at the center of gentrification debates in the city. Callowhill is, like Łódź and downtown Los Angeles, brimming with fertile decay, the kind of ill-defined terrain that sparks Lynch’s imagination. Fittingly, the area now enjoys a new nickname: the “Eraserhood.”

Greensgrow Summer CSA

Become a Greensgrow Summer CSA Member

This year for the first time, Bufad will be a Greensgrow CSA pick up location. We are very excited to partner with our friends at Bufad to bring our weekly & biweekly farm share program to the Callowhill neighborhood.
The pick up will be held at Bufad, 1260 Spring Garden Street on Saturdays • 1:30pm–3:30pm. Sign Up Online Here

Bufad will be baking a special bread and offering other locally made products on Saturdays alongside the CSA pick up.
Greensgrow is offering $15 off summer membership to the Callowhill Neighbors Association when you sign up by April 24. Use code SCSA16BUFAD at online checkout.

If you have not been a CSA member before you may wonder what exactly is a CSA?! The acronym “CSA” traditionally stands for Community Supported Agriculture; at Greensgrow we call it City Supported Agriculture since we are in the heart of Philadelphia. CSA members pay for a seasonal share of top quality produce from our local farm partners. In turn this helps the farms assure their crops are sold. You become a part of our community, reduce your carbon footprint and receive the benefits having more nutritious and delicious products on hand!

The season runs from May-November. We offer a full share (pick up every week) or half share (pick up every other week). Members can pay up front or in installments. In the share each week, members will receive a seasonal assortment of locally grown, fresh vegetables and fruit. In about 1/3 of the shares you will receive a locally made cheese and vegans will get a veggie based treat. Rounding out the share is your choice of local yogurt, butter, eggs, tofu, or seitan. Occasionally, we like to include a fun, locally made item into the share, like honey, preserves, cider or beer.

We put a lot of thought into what goes into the share, and over the past 13 years, we have fine-tuned our offerings according to members’ input and, of course, the unique abundance that each season brings. The CSA is a cooperative effort, working directly with small farms in PA, NJ, and Delaware within 150 miles of our fair city. Our farmers range from generations-old farms in southern New Jersey, to orchards in Delaware, to a Lancaster County co-op of single-family farms. Your membership helps make initiatives of the nonprofit, Greensgrow possible; educational programs, our community kitchen, SNAP Box program/low income farm share and mobile markets that increase food access in underserved neighborhoods.

Check out photos of last year’s share online here.

We hope you will join us this year as we navigate the ever changing landscape of our regional food shed! Click here to become a member today.
