Sometimes, things just seem to happen for a reason. The pieces fall into place in unexpected ways, and life takes a turn no one could have predicted. This rings strikingly true for the solo career of Memphis, Tennessee’s Julien Baker.

For years, Baker and a group of close friends have performed as the band Forrister (formerly The Star Killers), but when college took her four hours away, her need to continue creating found an outlet through solo work. The intent was never to make these songs her main focus, yet the process proved to be startlingly cathartic. As each song came into shape, it became more apparent that Baker had genuinely deep, surprisingly dark stories to tell from her thus far short life (she turns 20 this fall). Tales of her experiences are staggering, and when set to her haunting guitar playing, the results are gut wrenching and heartfelt, relatable yet very personal. There’s something wonderfully hypnotizing about Baker gently confessing her soul with such tremendous honesty.

At the prompting of a friend, Baker ventured to Richmond, Virginia to record a number of her new songs at Spacebomb Studios. The tracks from this session were circulated among Baker’s friends, meeting high praise and lots of encouragement for the songs to see a proper release. Soon, she found a home on 6131 Records’ increasingly diverse roster, and plans were made to release her debut full length, ‘Sprained Ankle.’

To call ‘Sprained Ankle’ a happy accident would be misleading as to the nature of these poignant, emotive songs. Yet no one, least of all Baker, could have predicted she’d be releasing an album, especially as a solo artist. Thankfully, now the world will be able to share in her passion and sorrow.

The Skatalites Band
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

The Skatalites began performing in Jamaica in May 1964. The group was so hot that their first rehearsal became a show. So many people had lined up outside the venue, they decided to just charge admission and let everybody in! They were the top musicians on the island at the time, having come together after playing in different bands and on various recording sessions. These records were made to be played at the many competing sound systems around the island. The band became legendary, backing all the developing artists of the day, such as Toots and The Maytals, Prince Buster and “The

Wailing Wailers” featuring Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. These groups were all recording on the new beat called ska, which had an infectious rhythm that was catching on like wildfire. Eventually, the beat slowed down into rocksteady, and then reggae. This wildfire spread unstoppably around the world, developing into a huge musical tree with many stylistic branches, including lovers rock, dub, dancehall/ ragga, ska-punk,, and others. Hugely popular groups, like The Police, The Clash, The Specials, The English Beat, Sublime and No Doubt, all have their roots firmly planted in the music of The Skatalites.

Since reforming after an almost 20 year hiatus in 1983, and beginning regular touring as a unit in 1989, they have not stopped thrilling audiences in every corner of the globe. Even after more than 50 years, and various lineup changes as members leave one stage for another, the band continues to perform and record new music in the inimitable Jamaican style, like only they can. The road has been long and hard, and sadly, seen most of the original members pass on. Often asked “when will you stop?” and “how do you keep doing it after all these years?”, the answer is simple: never – It’s the love of the music and the way our fans respond that keep us going Forward!
Featuring original alto sax man Lester “Ska” Sterling and vocalist Doreen Shaffer, along with the current lineup of outstanding musicians they have chosen to accompany them, the band proudly presents live the music of Jamaican Ska.

Forever indebted to the inspiration and talent of: Roland Alphonso, Lloyd Brevett, Don Drummond, Jerome “Jah Jerry” Haynes, Lloyd Knibb, Tommy McCook, Donat “Jackie” Mittoo, John “Dizzy Johnny”Moore, and Lester Sterling, collectively known as The Skatalites.

of Montreal

Innocence Reaches begins with a query. “How do you identify?” coos a robotic voice over a strikingly modern mix of bright synthpop and surging rave. The question too feels very of its time—as outdated ideas about gender and attraction are being overturned—but it’s also a fair ask whenever of Montreal debuts an album.

The project’s 14th LP follows two full decades of mercurial creative mania: swallowing up ’60s psych-pop, Prince-ly funk, and glammy prog in turn; morphing freely between full-band affair and cloistered confessional booth; comprising lyrics both painfully personal and absurdly fantastical; and recently drawing site-specific inspiration from culture capitals like San Francisco or New York City. The thread that runs through it all is Athens, GA’s Kevin Barnes, and Innocence Reaches finds him at his most light-hearted in years, working a Parisian stint, Top 40 sounds, and his newfound single status into the kaleidoscopic swirl. Even as he continues to sift the sonic and emotional detritus of his past, Barnes sums up his current mood in the opener’s title: “let’s relate.”

The most immediate surprise is the sound. Innocence Reaches is touched by contemporary electronica, indie pop, and EDM. For the first time in his career, Barnes tuned into now. “Forever I’ve been detached from current music,” he says. “I got into this bubble of only being in some other time period. I came up picking apart the Beach Boys, The Beatles, and symphonic pieces. But last year, I was hearing Jack Ü, Chairlift, Arca, and others, thinking about low end and sound collage. It was an extra layer to geek out on.”

Paris helped with that. Barnes lived in a friend’s studio for two weeks. It was in an apartment complex and, as he prefers to work at night, he couldn’t thrash loud instruments for fear of noise complaints from the neighbors. But the in-house arsenal of vintage synthesizers and drum machines was fair game—check the skittering beats of “a sport and a pastime” and thick hum of “chap pilot.”

By day, Barnes wandered Père Lachaise Cemetery, sat at cafés and wrote poems, read Jeans Ganet and Cocteau, or eavesdropped on conversations he couldn’t translate. “Being in that place where no one looks at me twice and I can’t even understand the language was like entering a parallel universe,” recalls Barnes. “It was cathartic and inspiring to amputate myself from my normal life and feel like an individual outside of all the baggage and memories.”

Enjoying anonymity, he sorted through the inner wreckage left by his divorce two years prior, and took stock of the briefer relationships since. “my fair lady” bids adieu to a familiar figure over sax-streaked disco-funk, but we soon meet Sarah from Detroit on darkwave dream “ambassador bridge,” and Gabrielle the Athenian Beach Goth amid the trappy space-glitch of “trashed Exes.” In “les chants de maldoror,” our hero cooly declares, “We only act nicely when we’re ruining hotel beds/I greeted you in a hundred doorways.” Innocence Reaches continues of Montreal’s recent autobiographical streak, which finds Barnes “fetishizing reality,” as he puts it.

But he’s concerned with a broader reality as well. “it’s different for girls” is an exploration of the “dilemme féminin”. Combining Daft Punk’s aptitude for groove with LCD Soundsystem’s wit—an endlessly quotable track that has Barnes outlining the dangers inherent in binary gendering: “It’s different for girls, from when they are children they’re de-personalized, aggressively objectified…” and later Barnes sings “It’s different for girls, they are mercurial creatures, not a masculine dissonance or sexual currency”. The song is less feminine anthem and more pop exegesis of societal codes. “though some women are demons all of them are God”. Indeed.

Apropos, Innocence Reaches’ cover design was an attempt by a new first-time father—Kevin’s brother David—to express his “wonderment for the female anatomy.” And the aforementioned “let’s relate” was indeed inspired by trans issues, a subject dear to Barnes’ heart. “I have a history of gender-bending in performances, but that’s also always been a part of my identity as a human,” he says. “I’m thankful to have an outlet for that, to express that and not get chased out of town or beat up. I think we’re moving in the right direction now.” The song is a call to find common ground in simply being human: “I like that you like you/I think that you’re great/I want to relate,” he sings cheerily.

Innocence Reaches features darker moments to be sure—isolation, anger, indifference, and the feeling that, like a Truffaut film, madness lurks just outside the frame—but as Barnes explains, “Epiphany comes from breakdown. If you can stay open and vulnerable, the nebulous becomes transparent. That’s one of the magical aspects of writing from personal life.”

Sometimes you’ve gotta intentionally court a little chaos in order to make one of the best, weirdest, brightest, catchiest, and most inventive albums in your already incredible catalog.

Ruby the Rabbitfoot

New As Dew is the Normaltown Records debut and sophomore release by Athens-based songstress, Ruby Kendrick AKA Ruby the RabbitFoot. Humid grooves, glittering guitars, barnacle-sharp piano melodies and Ruby’s deft turn of phrase ador this diverse family of pop songs. Label mate, fellow Athenian and multi-instrumentalist, Nate Nelson (White Violet), engineered and co-produced with Kendrick, but his ultimate contribution is an eloquent array of accompaniment. From guitar and bass, to keys and percussion, Nelson complements each track and confirms that with a little help from her friends, New As Dew will be a brilliant addition to the RabbitFoot canon. Don’t be fooled; this RabbitFoot isn’t riding on luck.

“New As Dew is utterly gimmick-free: these are great songs, sung in a style reminiscent of Jenny Lewis or Joni Mitchell, equally radio-ready sing-alongs as well-crafted gems.” – JamBase

“…the record manages to sound both vaguely familiar but wholly original. The stellar songwriting is punctuated by Kendrick’s crystal clear vocals and whisper quiet instrumentation.” – John B. Moore (Blurt Magazine)

“Ruby’s wispy sweet pipes help illuminate her confident songwriting, which is mature and skilled beyond her years. I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if Ruby was a household name this time next year.” – Tom Haugen (Inforty.com

DIÄT

The long awaited debut full length has finally arrived. And the wait was well worth it. Diät have worked, worked and reworked these 8 songs until they were perfect. Who is this band you ask? Let us introduce you:

“Brought together by a shared enthusiasm for bleak UK punk and a history of playing in hardcore bands, Berlin based DIÄT have created a sound that they have described, perhaps not entirely seriously, as ‘tough new wave’. Fans of Crisis, Killing Joke and The Mob (UK) should be pleased by the band’s unlikely synthesis of depressive drift and cranked, accelerated energy.

‘Positive Energy’ was recorded last Winter while huddled in a practice space overlooking the industrial landscape of frozen East Berlin, the album finds Diät reining in the threads of malignant enthusiasm still peppered throughout their earlier recordings (both 7″s previously released on this fine imprint) to focus on the cynicism and dejectedness that binds them as a band.”

VACANT LIFE

The debut hardcore punk 7″ by these new young Seattle miscreants is four tracks of nasty chorused quick mid tempo meat. Unorthodox and standout tunage in the vein of recent groups like GAG or BACK TO BACK but with a wholly original take on the sounds. They’ve spent the last year or so getting strong and honing their craft. We expect great things to come.

Haldol

Geoff Smith and Joey Cantrell started the band back in March 2011, and recorded a six-song demo. Geoff would play guitar and bass, but of course, couldn’t do both at shows. Trey Stallings played bass at shows, until Joey left for Hawaii for a good while, and took on drums. During that period, many bassists have been throughout the band, and Sean Flint was the first bassist to actually write something. This band has successfully been a band for a year and only has one original member.

THE GUESTS

In the fall of 2014, 30 of my Facebook friends suddenly changed their names to Mike Kaminsky and their profile pictures to a bunch of clones that kind of look like Robert Pattinson. It was close to impossible to tell any of them apart. They worked at a unified pack, constantly spamming one another’s Facebook pages, begging others to “please, do join us,” and generally trolling Zuckerberg, unbeknownst to the man himself. People did join them. The Kaminsky horde grew and grew until they were in the hundreds. There were Kaminskys in Brazil and even Dubai, but the origins of Kaminsky traced back to two bands in Philly who share some members—Noisey darlings Sheer Mag and the Guests.

We probably wouldn’t have known about the Guests or their Kaminsky anthem “Third Coming” if it wasn’t for the Facebook Kaminsky invasion, so thanks, Mike. The Guests pull influence from 80s darkwave and gothic pop, and they’re all a bunch of commies. Although “Third Coming” cribs its chorus from the Kaminsky “join us” mantra, the band told Impose last year that the song’s about a revolution and that their “vision is workers’ liberation.” Well, the Guests have decided to give us an exclusive stream today of their whole new album according to their ability, for us to post, according to our need.

The EP was produced by the venerable Ronnie Stone, who we recently interviewed. The Kaminsky thing is pretty much dead these days, but the Guests live on. Please, do join them.

A Body Has No Center: Curated by Ricky Yanas

September 2 – October 16, 2016
Opening Reception: Friday, September 2, 6-10pm

Tiger Strikes Asteroid Philadelphia is proud to present A Body Has No Center, a multi-site series of exhibitions curated by artist Ricky Yanas, featuring works by an expanding list of writers, poets, musicians, activists, intellectuals, educators, visual artists, craftspersons, and non-artists.

OPENING FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 2nd, 2016, THE EXHIBITIONS WILL ROTATE THROUGH OCTOBER 16th WITH AN OPENING RECEPTION ON SEPTEMBER 2nd FROM 6-10 PM AT TIGER STRIKES ASTEROID PHILADELPHIA.

“When people usually imagine where the life of a community is to be found, they usually look for it in the center of a community; to strengthen community, planners try to intensify life at the center, which means neglecting the edge.” “Chance events, mutating forms, elements which cannot be homogenized or are not interchangeable—all these disparate phenomena of the mathematical and/or natural world can none-the-less form a pattern, and that assemblage is whatwe mean by an open system.” – Richard Sennet

Ricky Yanas proposes A Body Has No Center as an “incomplete object” in an attempt to open up the idea of the gallery exhibition as a site for “emergent forms.” With a dynamic range of participants, a set of rotating mini-exhibitions in the Tiger Strikes Asteroid gallery and other venues, and a multitude of performances and events spread throughout the Philadelphia area, the project will be defined by a series of non-harmonious moments, events and atmospheres rather than a singular theme, specific space, or particular kind of work. Decentralizing the focus of the exhibition makes possible a space of play and informality where moments and relationships are privileged over the constant and concrete positions, echoing the joyous instability of any singular view of what we are.
