Philadelphia’s cult fried chicken and donut shop Federal Donuts launched a collection of bespoke donuts to commemorate David Lynch’s Fall 2014 exhibit at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where Lynch enrolled as an advanced painting student in 1966. “The Unified Field” is the first retrospective of the work he completed as a visual artist, with some 90 paintings and drawings on display until January 2015.
Federal Donuts created four custom flavors to fete the return of the storied director to Philadelphia, the city he credits as his greatest influence. Two thousand mini donuts were individually hand-dipped for the opening of the exhibit: the Twin Peaks-inspired “Cherry Pie” and “Good Coffee”; the “Chocolate Malted”; and the “Blue Velvet.”
We captured the process behind the recipe creation, learned what it’s like to taste art, and watched as Lynch enjoyed some damn good donuts.
