Visionary photographer David Swift invites you to go on an aesthetic journey to witness his mindful observations of beauty and despair; the comical and quixotic as seen through his eyes in everyday life. His thought-provoking artistry is romantically portrayed through the exclusive use of image capture on film.

Join us at the opening reception on Friday, August 26, 6 – 9 pm. Refreshments will be provided along with the acoustic musical stylings of his son, the über-talented Rob Swift.

1315 Gallery: Call for Visual Artists From the Fringe

In a nod to Philadelphia’s long running Fringe Festival, in which experimental performing artists show their work to the public, we at Gallery 1315 are calling for visual artists who would like to show their experimental work.

Do you have a body of work that you consider experimental? Perhaps it’s an unusual medium for you, or a new subject or maybe no subject. We’re looking for work from the fringes of your own imagination.

MEDIUMS:
Work can be two or three dimensional, as long as it can hang securely on the wall. No all digital work, except for digitally printed photographs, will be accepted.
2 D work cannot be larger than 40 inches on any side, and there are only about 3 spots in the gallery that will accommodate work that big.
3 D work cannot protrude more than 10 inches from the wall.

We can accommodate up to 30 pieces of small to medium size artwork. We’d prefer to hang 2 – 3 pieces of each artist’s work, so we’re looking for about 10 artists.

HOW TO SUBMIT
Send good quality images of up to 5 pieces of work to [email protected]
Image size should be no larger than 1000 pixels per side
Include your name, phone number, website, and street address/city with submission
Include a numbered worklist with titles, mediums and sizes, including frames, with submission
Is the work a multiple?

Explain briefly how this work fits the theme, in other words in what sense it is experimental.

There is no charge for submissions, but make sure to send accurate representations of the work.
(In other words don’t waste your time or our time with illegible submissions or cockeyed photos)

DATES:
Images due Tuesday August 16 2016
Notification date August 20
Delivery date, Wednesday Sept 6, noon – 4 pm or make another appointment
Opening date: Friday, Sept 9, 6:30 – 8:30 pm and Sunday Sept 11, 2 – 5 pm

THE GALLERY For those of you who do not know the space, Gallery 1315 is located on the 2nd floor at 1315 Buttonwood St in the Callowhill section of Philadelphia.
We will offer two opening parties for this show, and otherwise are open by appointment.

Expanding the Audience for Art in the 19th Century at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Arthur Ross Gallery

Throughout the 19th century, artists strived to enlarge the audience for art.  To accomplish this they employed new image technologies or used traditional media in new ways; they took up popular subjects and adapted fine art traditions to new venues and formats; and they developed collaborative working relationships with publishers and technicians to produce massive editions of printed pictures.   PAFA itself attempted to expand its audience by introducing Sunday hours with free admission, which they hoped would appeal to the working classes.  Many of PAFA’s faculty and alumni were among the prominent popularizes of art, including Rembrandt Peale, Thomas Sully, Christian Schussele, John Sartain, Alice Barber Stephens, William Glackens, Violet Oakley, John Sloan, and Maxfield Parrish, to name a few.  These artists helped shape the image culture and the mass market for pictures that have come down to us.
