2017 CALL FOR ARTIST SUBMISSIONS DEADLINE — Asian Arts Initiative

Deadline: Monday, February 27

A call for submissions! Asian Arts Initiative invites artists of all forms – performance, visual, theatrical, media, and musical – to take on the role of artist, designer, curator, and/or organizer and work with Asian Arts Initiative!

In 2013, Asian Arts Initiative initiated the Pearl Street Project (more information here), which seeks to transform the Pearl Street alley into a vibrant cultural space that celebrates and connects the diverse constituents in our neighborhood and beyond. At the same time, Asian Arts Initiative launched its Social Practice Lab artist-in-residency program (more information here), which provides artists the opportunity to embed themselves in Philadelphia’s Chinatown North, anchored on Pearl Street, to effect positive change through art within this highly diverse, rapidly changing community.

Please select from one of the following tracks:

PEARL STREET MICRO-PROJECTS

We are seeking project proposals that will transform the Pearl Street alleyway into a more vibrant cultural space that celebrates and connects the diverse constituents of the Chinatown North neighborhood. The micro-project can range from a single performance piece, an outdoor exhibit, a nighttime art installation, and anything between and/or beyond so long as it takes place on the 1100 and/or 1200 Blocks of Pearl Street.

We have a preference for projects that will take place during the late spring through early fall. Asian Arts Initiative can provide anywhere from $100 to $1,000 to cover all project expenses.

SOCIAL PRACTICE LAB

We are seeking artists that will embed themselves with Asian Arts Initiative’s staff and programs, as well as the Chinatown and Chinatown North neighborhood, to push the boundaries of their community and social practices, and the knowledge base of our own programs and neighborhood. We ask that that artists in this self-directed residency be productive, without necessarily producing a work. Instead, we ask that the artist commit to a minimum of 150 hours over a period of 5 weeks to 5 months (with the option of extending the residency as needed) being on site, participating in staff meetings, attending Asian Arts’ programs, and conducting self-directed research. Additionally, artists are expected to generate or participate in at least two Pearl Street micro-projects each month of their residency.

The residency will run during Spring-Summer of 2017. Asian Arts Initiative will provide a $5,000 artist honorarium, and a budget for any project production expenses. A portion of the production budget will be made available for discretionary spending, with a larger portion made available by project proposal. Exhibition and/or work space is also available in the Pearl Street Gallery.

Interested? Please apply by Monday, February 27, 2017
