Night Flight: Born Again w/ creator Stuart S. Shapiro
April 21 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm UTC-4
The 2017 Cinedelphia Film Festival hosts a Night Flight retrospective with creator Stuart S. Shapiro in attendance!
Dubbed “the single greatest rock omnibus program ever aired” by VH1 and “the most consistently weird and awesome thing on cable television in the 1980s” by Brooklyn Vegan, Night Flight was a syndicated staple that helped nurture a whole generation of punks, weirdos, and free thinkers.
In the words of the A/V Club:
“Night Flight — fuzzily remembered by ’80s punks who tuned in after stumbling home from shows, or, if you’re a little bit younger and had no boundaries, watched all night long at a Saturday night sleepover — represents the golden age of basic cable television. The variety program ran overnight on Fridays and Saturdays on the USA Network, and featured music videos, short films, documentaries, and animation like Bambi Meets Godzilla and Mr. Bill. And with MTV still in its infancy, Night Flight was the place to catch all the coolest punk and New Wave music videos. It was intended as “a beacon of fresh cutting-edge entertainment that was just not available anywhere on TV,” according to show creator Stuart S. Shapiro.”
Creator Stuart S. Shapiro will be in attendance for a pre-screening Q&A and discussion regarding the history of Night Flight. The video portion of the evening is a feature-length compilation that features newly restored segments from Van Halen, New Wave Theatre, Kate Bush and the late, great Prince plus nostalgic jewels from Ozzy Osbourne, BB King, Wendy O Williams, Divine, Billy Idol, Johnny Rotten, J-Men Forever, and more Night Flight treasures from the archive.
Night Flight continues to exist through Night Flight Plus, a premium subscription channel featuring original episodes of Night Flight and select feature films of the Night Flight DNA. The goal of Night Flight Plus is to resurrect the editorial spirit of Night Flight with the same curatorial edge they had in the ’80s for a new generation. This time around Night Flight’s special brew will be available anytime, anywhere, not just 3 A.M. in 1984.
$12 admission, doors open 30 minutes prior to start time.
