Hurry Up and Wait
A juried exhibition at Asian Arts Initiative in Philadelphia
Curated by Adriel Luis

Exhibition: September 1 – December 15, 2017
Opening reception: Friday, September 8, 6-8pm
Submission Deadline: Monday, July 10, 2017

CURATORIAL STATEMENT
Migration can seem like a single, bold act – the crossing over a border, the trip across an ocean, the transport from point A to point B. But the process is actually a series of steps that include correspondences, forms and often a whole lot of waiting – these individual tasks can be their own bureaucracies, each shrouded in mystery and inconsistency, despite the millions of people throughout the world who navigate them.

Recently, immigration in the United States has become even more convoluted, with ad-hoc travel bans, stop-and-go deportation policies and hearsay visa requirements all adding confusion to an already-complex experience.

Hurry Up and Wait is an exhibition featuring art that explores these moments within a moment. Hidden between the drama and debate of immigration are nuances, glitches, errors and fineprint that can be frustrating, mundane, anti-climactic – and sometimes even surprisingly simple. Here we encounter the tensions where policy and humanity meet – the range of emotions, wonder, assumptions and discoveries that make migration much more than simply a political issue.
